We joined the City Academy family in 2012 when our two daughters, Gabrielle and Madison, were in kindergarten. City Academy was the right fit for our family because it provided everything we were looking for in a school.

City Academy has provided a solid educational foundation for our girls. They are confident, focused, and have a love for learning. City Academy has far exceeded our expectations!

My Giving Story: Mark Wheeler

City Academy has given me opportunities that have shaped who I am as a person. I have held leadership positions in my community and secondary school because of skills that City Academy helped me develop. One of these skills is perseverance. Mr. Danforth always encouraged me to never give up. Even when something was out of my comfort zone, he encouraged me to persevere. I can still hear him say, “You will never know what you can do if you do not try.”

Giving Story: The Towle Family

Our family strongly believes in the transformational power of education. Don Danforth’s vision to provide exceptional education and bold expectations to children in St. Louis, regardless of their family’s income or zip code, was a vision we quickly supported. Once we learned of City Academy, we became supporters of the school’s endowment fund in 1999.

We give to the school’s endowment so that our support can continue in perpetuity. City Academy is so good and so right for the St. Louis community. We want to see the school continue indefinitely. City Academy’s endowment is tangible evidence that the community supports, endorses, and is confident in the mission of the school.

The education that City Academy provides is an incredible investment in children and families in our community. We are proud to support an organization that serves the St. Louis community for the greater good.

Giving Story: The Richards Family

We joined the City Academy family in 2015 because we were looking for a school that would provide high-quality education for our twin girls. After attending an open house at City Academy, we found that the school not only met all of our needs, but offered additional opportunities that we had not considered.

We enrolled our children in City Academy due to the culture of the school, the challenging curriculum, the approach to learning, and our girls’ excitement about the school after their day visit.

We give to the annual fund because we believe in the mission of the school. City Academy provides exceptional educational opportunities to children in St. Louis. The school also provides many parenting tools to families that help support the social and emotional growth of children. We want to see City Academy continue to provide these opportunities to families for years to come.

Giving Story: John Brightman

City Academy recently lost one of our “Founding Fathers.” John Brightman led us to our early success. He was an original board member, generous supporter, and a fierce and fearless fundraiser, who always pushed for excellence.

John was also my little league baseball coach. It had been many years since I had seen him, when we ran into each other at a friend’s wedding in 1997. I told him that we were starting a school. John immediately exclaimed, “Great idea! I want to help you raise money.” What start-up nonprofit doesn’t wish for that?
