Whitfield School Gives Back to City Academy

We are thrilled to have great partnerships with other private, independent schools in St. Louis including Whitfield School. On Thursday, October 4, 2018, several Whitfield students volunteered their time at City Academy for Whitfield’s community service day. One of the students was City Academy alumnus, Malik Smith ’15 (Whitfield School ’21), who decided to give back to his alma mater.

Volunteers Are Role Models for City Academy Students

Volunteers from Whitfield School and John Burroughs School

This spring, two very special visitors have been around City Academy. You may find on the field playing kickball, in the classroom assisting our students, or in the library helping pack up our books for renovations to our current facility.

Josh (John Burroughs School ’18) and Jordan (Whitfield School ’18) are high school seniors at John Burroughs School and Whitfield School. As a capstone project to their high school experiences, they each followed their passion to connect with students by selecting City Academy as their internship site.

Celebrating Literacy

April is Literacy Month at City Academy. We’re celebrating with our students, faculty, staff, and volunteers!

This week, several individual City Academy supporters and community partners, such as Bring Me A Book St. Louis, participated in story-time. These volunteers read books such as Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein in upper grade classrooms and Flight School by Lita Judge to early childhood students.

After the stories were read, scholars brought the books to life though novel engineering projects. Novel engineering allows our students to integrate literacy and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math).

Buddy Morning | October 6, 2016

Buddy Morning sponsor, 2e Creative, with their buddies (pictured above)

Buddy Morning is a great opportunity for corporate groups and individuals to spend quality time with a City Academy student. Twice a year, community partners, donors, supporters, and volunteers spend one-on-one time with a student and experience what makes our school so special. These buddies participate in a learning activity together and create a great friendship with their student buddy.

Community Transformation: Dreams for Urban Renewal

As the only private, independent school in north St. Louis city, we are committed to providing exceptional education that transforms the community. One of the best examples we have of our community impact is our alumni. For many students, once they graduate from elementary school, they no longer have much contact with the school or with their teachers. However, for City Academy alumni, these graduates not only keep in touch with the school and the faculty, they are provided with academic assistance, programs, and internships at City Academy.

Alumni Pay It Forward

We are fortunate to have amazing alumni who know the importance of giving back to the community. This summer, twenty City Academy alumni are volunteering and interning at our summer program, Summer at City. Many of these young alumni return to the school to pay it forward to the next generation of City Academy students. These alumni are volunteering in classrooms, on field trips, in the administration office and development department.

One alumnus who is interning this summer is Kendrick Smith ’08 (Chaminade ’14). Kendrick is our Communications Intern and is assisting us in sharing Summer at City stories.
