“I am living proof of the transformative power of education, and I want to share these same opportunities and experiences with students and their families. City Academy students challenge me with reminders of individual learning differences and the need to bring my ‘A-game’ to school every day. The students and staff inspire me to strive to be the best version of myself just as I push others to grow and be the best versions of themselves. Ours is a truly symbiotic relationship. For me, it an honor and privilege to work with such an amazing community of students, families, and staff at City Academy.”

Erica Venne is taking on a new role at City Academy this year as our Upper School Director, but her relationship with the school began in 2008 as a student-teacher and interim Spanish instructor. Prior to her return in 2014, she was a Spanish teacher at Granite City High School for six years. From the fall of 2014 until this school year, Erica was a Humanities teacher in fourth and fifth grades at City Academy and then our Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator for two years. She is trained and experienced in curriculum design and planning, professional development, teacher evaluation, instructional coaching, program evaluation, vision planning, and mission-statement writing.

Erica has taught virtually every age-group from preschool to adults. Prior to returning to City Academy, she was a Spanish instructor at the high school and college levels, worked for a local summer reading program in the St. Louis area for three years, and taught English Language Arts for Aim High for four years. In college, she studied abroad in Spain at the University of Seville, had an internship with the human rights department of the Spanish government, and graduated as the valedictorian of the Class of 2005.

Erica lives in Illinois with her husband, John (a high school math teacher and wrestling coach), seventeen-year-old Emma, and four-year-old Reed. She is fluent in Spanish and enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, cooking, and learning about world cultures.
