For twin sisters Gabrielle and Madison, their first year at Johns Hopkins University brought a new level of challenge — and an opportunity to discover just how much they could take on.

As track & field student-athletes, both balanced rigorous academics with athletics, campus involvement, leadership, and new friendships. While they entered Hopkins together, their first year also gave them room to grow individually.

For Gabrielle, one of the biggest lessons was discovering she didn’t have to limit herself to one part of the college experience. Along with track and academics, she balanced two work-study jobs, clubs, leadership positions, and friendships.

“I was able to pursue my academic, athletic, professional, and personal interests all at once,” Gabrielle shared, “and I learned that I don’t have to choose just one world to belong to.”

Madison focused on building a strong foundation for her pre-med pathway. She made an intentional decision to seek guidance early, regularly attending office hours and working with teaching assistants.

“Looking back, I’m proud of myself for making the decision to seek guidance early on,” Madison said.

Both sisters have also found meaningful ways to serve the Baltimore community. Madison serves as Community Service Chair for Hopkins’ Black Student Union, while both have leadership roles with Run Your City, which introduces Baltimore children to track. They are also involved with the Black American Heritage Group, helping raise funds for scholarships.

Their commitment to service continues at City Academy. This summer, Madison and Gabrielle volunteered with Summer at City and joined their father, City Academy Board Member Shawn Moore, for a special presentation helping students explore data and its real-world applications.

As they begin their sophomore year, Madison and Gabrielle are ready to build on that foundation — continuing to challenge themselves, serve others, and forge paths of their own.
