A solid foundation in early learning is essential to a child’s overall academic success. Here at City Academy our Preschool and Junior Kindergarten (often called Pre-Kindergarten at other schools) programs help provide our scholars with hands-on learning experiences and give them the readiness skills necessary to help them grow, socially, emotionally, and academically. Ultimately, our goal is to help our scholars develop a love for learning and to become independent thinkers and lifelong learners.

Preschool
(3- and 4-year olds)

During the Preschool years, children continuously work on developing language, vocabulary and social skills. In our preschool classroom, students learn through play and are introduced to a wide variety of activities during center time that allows them to explore their curiosity. They begin learning skills that are essential to their development such as listening, speaking, following directions, sharing, independence, problem-solving, self-help skills, and building relationships with their peers. Moreover, children who participate in our Preschool program are better prepared for the academic skills that are introduced in our Junior Kindergarten classroom.

Junior Kindergarten
(4- and 5-year olds)

As our scholars enter the Junior Kindergarten class, they will build upon the foundational skills learned in Preschool. Throughout the day, they will work to develop skills in language, literacy, vocabulary, writing and math. They are also given the opportunity to develop social skills through interactions with peers and adults. While each child develops at his or her own pace, they learn how to work independently using their prior knowledge to aid in their academic success. Children in Junior Kindergarten will also engage in Kindergarten-readiness activities that will help prepare them for the academic rigor they will experience in Kindergarten.
