Supervision Activities

Students in Supervision will be able to choose between activities such as Homework Hall, Board Games, Outdoor Fun, Gym Play, Karaoke, and Movie Fridays (parents do NOT need to register for these choices). 

In addition, students in Supervision can register to participate in one of City Academy’s “premiere” after school programs, depending on their grade level. During the fourth quarter, those options will be Girl Scouts, Step Team, and Tennis & Life Skills.

 Academic Excellence Study Hall

Academic Excellence Study Hall provides an opportunity for students to focus on completing assignments, catching up on missed work, or preparing for upcoming lessons in a structured and supportive environment. During this time, students will be given the time and resources to develop better time management, organizational skills, and accountability by providing a consistent routine. The quiet setting allows for focused, distraction-free learning, improving productivity and confidence. Additionally, it encourages independence and responsibility, building habits that benefit students throughout their academic journey and beyond.

Voices in Action

Reader Theater, drama and skits for emerging leaders. Looking for a way to grow your voice and use it to inspire an create? Join Voices in Action! Students will learn how to play roles in Reader Theater skits and put on a performance at the end of the quarter. This is a club for the outspoken, and growing readers who has the ability to read a simple script at their grade level or above.

Flavors and Stories of Africa

The African Culinary Program is a dynamic, hands-on learning experience designed to introduce 5th/6th graders to the rich and diverse culinary traditions of Africa. Through interactive cooking sessions, storytelling, and cultural exploration, students will gain a deeper appreciation of African heritage while developing essential culinary skills.

The program will consist of 2 two-hour sessions where students learn to prepare authentic African dishes, explore the spices, techniques, and ingredients that define various regional cuisines, and understand the nutritional benefits of these foods. A professional African chef will guide students through the cooking process, while a storyteller will share traditional folktales, historical narratives, and personal stories that highlight the cultural significance of the dishes being prepared. By integrating culinary arts with storytelling, the program will foster cultural appreciation, creativity, and teamwork, encouraging students to embrace diversity through food.

WUSlam Poetry Workshop

Are you ready to be heard and have fun with words? Join our Slam Poetry Class designed just for middle schoolers! This exciting workshop is all about discovering your unique voice and sharing your stories through poetry.

You’ll learn from members of WashU’s Premiere Slam Poetry Group, WUSlam, how to create powerful poems that come to life with rhythm and emotion. We’ll start at the basics on the page and work our way up to the stage! This workshop includes fun writing games, useful performance and public speaking activities, and provides a friendly, supportive space to share our creations and get comfortable expressing ourselves.

Whether you’re a first-timer or love to write, this class is for you! Come make new friends, unleash your creativity, and get ready to step up to the mic. At the end of the program, we will put on a slam for families, friends and peers to attend. Your words matter—let’s make them shine!
