Volunteer Reflection: Megan Walker
May 01, 2015

I found City Academy though a friend when I was looking for a new volunteer opportunity and for almost three years, I have had the joy of working on developing reading skills with Daphne, a wonderful little girl full of energy and life. In that time, we have read loads of books, told one another stories, shared cupcakes and giggled a LOT. It is a magical thing, watching a child begin to understand and grasp the joys of reading and storytelling. She has learned so much in a few short years and I couldn’t be more proud of her.

My husband and I are preparing to embark on a six month journey around the world and the only concern I had about a long term trip was leaving my sweet little friend. Daphne and I have spoken at length about how long I’ll be gone, where I’m going on the map and how we’ll email and Skype (with the assistance of the incredibly dedicated City Academy staff) so that we can stay in touch. I am so looking forward to her emails and seeing her sweet face through the magic of technology.

Working with Daphne has been the highlight of my week for the last three years. I’m so grateful for City Academy’s support of the volunteers and the fierce dedication its teachers and administrators have for seeing every child succeed. It has as been pure joy to be a part of the community and become friends with one of the most delightful little girls in the world.
