VJ White, a sophomore at Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School (MICDS), reflects on his journey from City Academy with gratitude. Starting at City Academy in second grade, VJ credits the school with preparing him well for secondary education, particularly in writing and reading,
“I really enjoyed my experience,” he shared. “It helped me a lot in secondary school too.”
VJ recalls three teachers who left a lasting impact: Mrs. Oteng, his math teacher who he still reaches out to for help from time-to-time; his writing teacher Mrs. Fennoy, who taught him to organize his thoughts; and Mr. Speed, who helped shape his academic approach. “They taught me how to take notes and study efficiently,” VJ said, emphasizing how these skills have continued to benefit him.
VJ’s academic interests include English and history, and he has a passion for music, particularly playing the viola. His love for orchestra began at City Academy with Mrs. Reycraft, where he mostly played the violin – but had the chance to play viola in 5th grade. This passion has continued in high school, where he takes orchestra as a class. One of his most memorable experiences was performing at Six Flags and Forest Park.
In addition to academics and music, VJ is committed to giving back to his community through volunteer work. He volunteered at City Academy, helping with the summer school program for junior kindergarten. In 2023, VJ was selected as one of the recipients of the MICDS President’s Volunteer Service Award, which recognizes and celebrates students’ remarkable commitment to community service.
Looking ahead, VJ is focused on staying ahead in his studies, a lesson he emphasizes to current City Academy students. He advises them to find a secondary school that fits their learning style and to build strong relationships with their teachers. “Don’t fall behind because it’s hard to catch up,” he cautions, “and build relationships with your teachers because they can help you out a lot.”
As for his future, VJ is considering a career in business, possibly in marketing, though he is still exploring his options. Through the Strive alumni program at City Academy, he continues to receive guidance on navigating his academic and career path. “It’s been helpful because it helps me learn about different career paths,” VJ noted.
