About City Academy

City Academy was co-founded in 1999 by Don Danforth and Duncan Marshall on the belief that a family’s geographic location and income should never be a barrier to accessing high-quality education. Twenty-five years later, we remain the only private, independent school in the region that provides scholarship support to 100% of our current scholars.

City Academy Programs

A solid foundation in early learning is essential to a child’s overall academic success. Here at City Academy our Preschool and Junior Kindergarten (often called Pre-Kindergarten at other schools) programs help provide our scholars with hands-on learning experiences and give them the readiness skills necessary to help them grow, socially, emotionally, and academically. Ultimately, our goal is to help our scholars develop a love for learning and to become independent thinkers and lifelong learners.

Students at City Academy learn mathematical reasoning and skills through the Singapore Math model. Through investigation, intentional play, direct instruction, and group work, students build a strong foundation in place value and number sense. This foundation serves them well as they progress into the Primary Mathematics curriculum in 1st through 5th grades. In 6th grade, students round out their mathematical experience at City Academy with pre-algebra and instruction to prepare them for success in secondary school.

City Academy’s science program sets the standard for elementary science education in the St. Louis region. Using the Next Generation Science Standards as the foundation, our teachers create a curriculum that integrates science, technology, engineering, art, math, robotics, and countless other topics into cohesive and engaging lessons.

Science instruction is hands-on in every grade level, beginning with nature exploration and observation in our youngest grades and culminating with traditional tests and research projects in our oldest grades. Students make observations, collect and analyze data, make predictions, and more. Our scientists are well-rounded, critical thinkers who create meaning through exploration and discovery.

City Academy teachers employ strategies derived from the research of the Science of Reading to build background knowledge, phonemic and phonological awareness, and a genuine interest in reading. Starting with our youngest learners, teachers focus on letter and sound identification, while using the Heggerty approach to build phonemic awareness skills as a strong baseline for future literacy work.

Our students continue to learn phonics skills with the Fundations program through 3rd grade, when the focus then shifts to vocabulary using base words, root words, prefixes, and suffixes. All language arts classes integrate reading and writing into daily lessons, using the Wit & Wisdom curriculum as our guide and expanding upon it based on individual student needs and interests.

Research projects and book studies begin in 2nd grade, but all grade levels use literature as the foundation for building knowledge and incorporating multiple subjects into a lesson. Independent reading is critical to improving students’ comprehension and love for reading. Each grade assigns independent reading as a daily homework assignment.

Our Library features more than 14,000 books and is staffed by the Library & Media Director as well as a full-time librarian that helps students carefully select appropriate books.

All students engage in art and music classes weekly to build fine motor skills, an appreciation for the fine arts, and a love for performing arts. Starting in 1st grade, all students also participate in violin twice a week, learning through the Suzuki method.

Starting with our 3- and 4-year-olds and continuing through 6th grade, students participate in Spanish instruction at least twice a week. City Academy employs two native-speaking Spanish teachers who build a love for the language and Hispanic culture around the world.

Our after school program, Extended Day, is offered to all City Academy students, every day, at no additional cost to families. During this time, students participate in a range of enrichment opportunities based on their unique interests. On any given day, you may find City Academy students learning to bake, developing technical skills and building in robotics, playing tennis, taking a leadership course, and much more.

A member of our Alumni Support Team meets with each alumni in secondary school at least twice per semester at their school to check in on their academic, social and emotional needs. Students set goals for their semester with plans to achieve them.

City Academy’s Strive for College Program meets twice per month for 2.5 hours on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis. The program pairs alumni with Wash U students for mentoring and support. Lessons are provided at the beginning of each Strive session based on grade level needs with presentations on career pathways, resume building, networking and more.

Other components of Strive include: ACT/SAT prep; college applications and scholarship support; general homework support; study habits and organizational skill building; and networking.

In addition, our Alumni Support Team assists students preparing for college by providing opportunities for Leadership Development. We assist with community engagement by facilitating volunteer experiences, internships, and paid work opportunities; we help hone skills necessary for on-campus leadership roles; and we organize summer opportunities for further skill development.
