As part of City Academy’s ongoing efforts to provide opportunities to our alumni for networking, enrichment, and growth, internships were made available at four St. Louis companies this summer: M3 Engineering Group, Reinsurance Group of America (RGA), St. Louis Trust & Family Office, and Thompson Street Capital Partners.
Three high school students interned with RGA, while one college student interned at each of the other three.
The internship program was made possible by a collaboration between City Academy’s Development Office and the Alumni Office. Led by Chief Development Officer Janice Bailey, the Development Office made the connections with City Academy supporters at each of the four businesses. The positions were then advertised to City Academy alumni by Jen Glassmeyer, Director of Alumni and Community Partnerships.
Carlos Hillman (CA ‘14) completed his internship at St. Louis Trust this summer, ahead of his senior year at DePauw University in Indiana where he is majoring in Economics. In his role, he was able to shadow different positions throughout the office as well as work on numerous small projects and one summer-long investment project.
“I learned how to effectively build my network, create professional-grade presentations, communicate in a timely and effective manner, and improved my time management skills,” Carlos said.
“Carlos was everything we look for in an intern – smart, eager to learn and willing to roll up his sleeves and help,” said Lollie Coulter, Human Resources Manager. “But above all else, Carlos was a delight to have in the office and his presence is definitely missed!”
Alysha Ford (CA ‘14) is now a senior at Missouri S&T in Rolla, studying Environmental Engineering. She completed her summer internship at M3 Engineering which provides engineering planning and design support for public and private clients in a variety of areas including water, stream restoration, site design, and transportation. Alysha worked on a civil engineering project, scanning manholes around St. Louis to take measurements, and using software to update an electronic map.
In addition to learning more about various engineering roles and new software, Alysha enjoyed the chance to work both outside and inside to help her decide what type of role she would like to pursue when she graduates. She sincerely appreciated the opportunity provided by M3 and City Academy.
“I really appreciate City Academy caring about the alumni and helping us be successful beyond our elementary and middle-school years,” Alysha said. “I love that City Academy says they’re like a family and they really stick to that and make sure everyone feels like that.”
City Academy hopes to expand the internship offerings in future years. St. Louis Trust Executive Vice President (and CA Board Member) Michael Small said, “City Academy alumni know how to work hard, understand how to communicate in a respectful manner, and seek to build relationships. I think all companies who hire interns would like kids with these attributes.”
